Unit 4: Celebrations Reflection
I thought that all the studios in the unit related perfectly with the theme of celebrations. We studied Nick Cave for the first studio and made finger puppets, which celebrated our identity. This was definitely my favorite studio of all the studios we have done for this class! I loved this studio because even though I was working on an art project, I felt like I was just playing with clay because I enjoyed it so much. Pink (2006) states that “To play is to act out and be willful, exultant and committed as if one is assured of one’s prospects” (p.187). I chose to make a giraffe for my finger puppet because that is an animal that I find I identify with. For the second studio, we studied Norman Rockwell and created a magazine cover that embodied a celebration of sort. I really enjoyed this studio as well because I got to really personalize my cover and reflect on the many celebrations I have had in my life! The magazine cover I made reflects the celebration I had when the Missouri Tigers beat the Texas A&M Aggies in the SEC East Championship! Finally, we studied Miriam Schapiro for our third studio and had the opportunity to choose what studio we wanted to do. The studio I chose to do relates with the integrated lesson plan I made but it also relates to celebrating a special person in your life. Pink (2006) states, “show others how much they really mean to you and demonstrate your empathy by creating something that is your own work” (p. 183). My cubist portrait is of my sister who is a very influential person in my life today. This artwork that celebrates my sister perfectly demonstrates Pink’s point of showing empathy to others by creating your own work.
I would integrate the Nick Cave studio with geography. For example, if students are learning about jungles or rainforests, they can represent the types of creatures that live in that habitat by making finger puppets out cloud clay. This lesson would celebrate the different climates around the world and the diversity of creatures. Geography would be great to integrate with the Norman Rockwell studio as well because students could pick a specific location around the world and create a magazine cover portraying that location. National Geographic would be a great example of this. This lesson would celebrate the earth’s beauty and diversity in landmarks. Last, I could use the quilt studio from Miriam Schapiro and have my students make a quilt that represents an influential female in history. This lesson would celebrate those who have impacted either our country or even the world!
